Romanticizing Past Relationships

Once again, TV has taught me a valuable life lesson. And I would like to share it with you all.

When it comes to break-ups, people tend to fall into one of two categories. You either cut that person out of your life or you try to remain friends. I've always gone the "friends" route. My view is that you shared some part of yourself with that person, and created a connection, so there's no reason to let that go to waste. Some of my very close female friends were once my girlfriend.

Understandably, there is a problem that sometimes arises. We've all gone through this. After a relationship ends, you often begin to forget the bad things that happened. You try to focus on the good things. So after a while you think, "Hey why did we break up in the first place?" or "Maybe we should try again." But I would say that 90% of the time this ends in disaster. All those problems will come rushing back the first time you have an argument. No, it's best to let Ex-partners remain in the past.

So what can we do to help prevent this situation? The TV show How I Met Your Mother gave us an answer.

Write a letter to your future self.

Right after a break-up, sit down and write a letter to yourself that details every reason that the two of you broke up. Make sure to place emphasis on all of the bad stuff. Every annoying habit. Just get it all out.

Not only will this serve as good therapy, but it can prevent you from making a big mistake later on in life.

And thus endeth Rob's Relationship Advice of the day.
