Corporate Monkeys Comic #19: Christmas 2010

As I've said in the past, we keep sketching new comic ideas but Trian has just been too busy to make them into real comics. Well this time I decided to take matters in to my own hands and draw one myself. Please understand that while I am very good at making the dialog and storyline of a comic, I can't really draw. So this kinda sucks. But it's a step in the right direct, yeah??

Homemade Egg Nog

Anyone who reads my blog knows that I freakin love Christmas. I watch a million Christmas movies, make Christmas cookies, and just generally ooze holiday cheer. But there's one thing that I've always felt bad about. I buy Egg Nog from the store instead of making it myself. So this year I fixed that, and I wanted to share it with you all.

Here is how you make Egg Nog.

The following recipe makes about a Half Gallon of Egg Nog (good enough for 2 people to enjoy for an evening). An important thing to remember is that after you make it, you have to leave it in the fridge over night... so prepare accordingly.

Ingredients:

6 large eggs

1 cup of white rum

1 lb of sugar

1 pint milk

1 pint heavy whipping cream

1 pint of bourbon

Pinch of Baking Soda

Nutmeg

Preparation:

1. Beat egg yolks and whites separately, and then pour together.

2. Add the rum, sugar, and a pinch of baking soda and beat all together into a stiff batter.

3. Add the milk, whipping cream and bourbon.

4. Stir and refrigerate overnight. Before serving, stir and add nutmeg. 

NOTES:
- You may want to add a little less alcohol at first. You can always add more later, but if you add too much in the beginning then you have to start adding other ingredients to even it out.


- Use an Electric Mixer so that you will ensure that those eggs REALLY get beaten thoroughly.


- If it's not thick enough for you then mix up some more milk, cream, and sugar and then add it to the Egg Nog.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Ok by now anyone who knows me must know that I have an unhealthy obsession with christmas movies. But what most people don't know if WHY I have this unhealthy obsession. So instead of just listing the new movies I purchased this year (don't worry, I will at the end) I wanted to share a story.

2004 was a good year for me, but a bad year for my family.

In that year, I graduated from college and got my first (and then second) real job. I began adulthood.

My family wasn't so lucky. In July of that year we had the South Jersey floods. My sister's house was basically wiped out. My grandmother's house was badly damaged. My parents house had some problems. Plus cars and property and such. It was pretty tragic.

In October of 2004, my grandmother died.

In November 2004, my grandfather died. He was Robert Thomas Harford Sr. and I'm the 3rd. This was 3 days before my birthday. I didn't even celebrate it that year.

So by the time December rolled around, there wasn't much happiness or "christmas spirit" going around. And then one day I was out shopping and came across a DVD box set of Christmas Classics like Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Comin to Town, etc. I already collected movies but it never occured to me to buy a christmas movie. So I went online and ordered a few more.

Then something happened which made 2004 a lot better for me.

I spent the weekend with someone special. We spent the whole time wrapping christmas presents, watching christmas movies, and baking christmas cookies. It was the greatest weekend ever. It brought me out of my fog, and made me happy again.

So I guess each year I've tried to recreate that weekend. I buy a bunch of new DVDs and spend every weekend in december trying to follow that tradition. And no matter how good or bad things are for me each year, those weekends make me feel really good.

Well anyway - I don't know if I have any great additions to my collection this year. Just lots of random stuff - plus I lost a few in the divorce and had to replace them. So here are some latest additions:

Corporate Monkeys comic #7 - Christmas Edition

Well, it's a few days late... but here's our Christmas comic. It's another attempt at a one-panel story. I think we did a good job.

On a side note, I'm so glad Christmas is over. I was ready for it to end before it actually happened. This was for a few reasons:
1. I'd been listening to nothing but Christmas music on the radio since thanksgiving. That gets on your nerves after a while.

2. I'd been watching almost nothing but Christmas movies since thanksgiving. Out of 60+ hours of movies that I own, we watched about 36. Yeah I know... that's a bit low... but I'd been busy.

3. As a guy, I don't shop very often (unless you count Best Buy). So going to store after store to find gifts for eleventy billion people really sucked. I should have planned ahead and ordered everything online.

4. And this is the biggest part of all. Now that I'm in a relationship, I have more than one family to see at Christmas. We spent one day with my extended family, and then another day with her extended family, and then I still had to go home ON Christmas day to celebrate with my immediate family. I was freakin tired by Christmas eve.

So now it's over. Time to move on to New Years Eve. Then my 1-year anniversary in January. Then Valentines day in February. Then J-Love's birthday in April. Then a destination wedding in June. Not to mention company trips, and a personal vacation.....

...oh god... I'm never going to get any rest again...
